The A1 and the A1 mini are the same printer in two sizes. Same hotend, same speed and flow figures, same sensors, same supported materials. For $80 more the A1 gives you 2.9 times the build volume and a hotter bed, and costs you 74 percent more desk. Unless space is the constraint, the A1 is the better buy.

Where they are identical

This list is longer, and it is the reason the choice is simple. Both spec pages give an all-metal hotend to 300 °C, hardened steel extruder gears, a stainless steel 0.4 mm nozzle with 0.2, 0.6 and 0.8 mm as options, 1.75 mm filament and a filament cutter. Both quote a maximum toolhead speed of 500 mm/s, maximum acceleration of 10,000 mm/s² and a maximum hotend flow of 28 mm³/s, measured the same way: Bambu ABS at 280 °C on a 150 x 150 mm single-wall model. Both have a camera up to 1080p with timelapse, filament runout and tangle sensors, filament odometry and power loss recovery. Both connect by Wi-Fi and Bambu-Bus, and our database lists the AMS lite as the multi-material option for each.

The material lists match word for word as well: PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA are “Ideal”. ABS, ASA, PC, PA, PET and carbon or glass fiber reinforced filaments are “Not Recommended”.

So the mini is not the slower or cruder machine. A part that fits on both should come off both the same, as far as the specifications can tell you. Headline speed is also the wrong thing to compare on any printer: what limits real prints is flow, and 28 mm³/s is the same ceiling on each. Build volume, in practice

Volume goes with the cube of the side, so 256 mm against 180 mm is a bigger jump than it sounds: 16.8 liters against 5.8, a ratio of 2.88. Per liter of build space the mini costs $37.60 and the A1 $17.80.

Liters are an abstraction, though. What decides it is the longest thing you want to print in one piece. Laid flat and square to the bed, the mini takes a 180 mm part and the A1 a 256 mm one. Turned corner to corner, a slim part can reach about 254 mm on the mini and 362 mm on the A1. That is geometry for a part with no width, so knock a bit off for anything real.

Think about what you plan to make, and measure the biggest item on the list. Anything under 180 mm in every direction prints on either machine. Anything between 180 and 256 mm prints in one piece on the A1 and has to be split and glued on the mini. If your list has more than the odd item in that band, that settles it.

The big bed also lets you batch. Bed area is 655 cm² against 324 cm², so roughly twice as many copies of a small part per plate. If you sell prints, that is half the plate changes. The pricing guide shows how machine time feeds into a quote.

The bed temperature gap is smaller than it looks

A 100 °C bed against 80 °C sounds like the A1 opens up engineering materials. By Bambu’s own list it does not. ABS, ASA, PC and nylon are “Not Recommended” on both, which is what you would expect from open-frame machines, since those filaments want a warm enclosure. Where 80 °C does pinch is PETG from other brands. The bed ranges on the data sheets we hold:

  • Bambu PETG HF and PETG Basic: 65 to 75 °C. Fine on either printer.
  • Prusament PETG: 70 to 90 °C. The mini reaches the lower half of the range.
  • eSUN PETG: 75 to 90 °C. The mini reaches only the bottom third.

So a mini owner who stays with Bambu filament loses nothing, and one who buys whatever PETG is on offer may find the maker’s recommended bed temperature out of reach. PLA and TPU sit far below 80 °C on every data sheet we have, so they are unaffected.

The plate lists differ too. The A1’s page names the Cool Plate and High Temperature Plate; the mini’s names the Smooth PEI plate instead. I would not read much into that without asking Bambu, but check the plate you want is listed for your machine before ordering one.

Footprint, weight and power

The A1 occupies 465 x 410 mm against 347 x 315 mm, which is 0.19 m² against 0.11 m², or 74 percent more desk. Both are bed-slingers: the bed moves front to back, so each needs clear space in front of and behind those dimensions. The spec pages do not give a figure for that swept depth, so measure your shelf generously. Add room for an AMS lite if you want one.

On power, 150 W against 1300 W looks dramatic and mostly is not. Both figures are rated maximums, and a rated maximum is not an average draw. The A1’s figure also depends on supply voltage: 1300 W at 220 V and 350 W at 110 V. The spec page does not explain the split. The practical point is not to put either number into a running-cost sum. Who each one suits

Buy the A1 mini if your space is a shelf or a shared desk, if what you print is small, or if $80 matters more than size right now. It gives up nothing in speed or quality on paper. It also makes sense as a second printer beside an A1, since the spec pages list the same nozzle sizes and filament for both.

Buy the A1 if you have the desk. It costs 37 percent more and holds nearly three times as much, takes third-party PETG at its recommended bed temperature, and batches twice the parts per plate.

Buy neither if ABS or ASA is on your list. Bambu says so itself, and an enclosed machine costs little more. The printer database lets you compare all three, and the rest, on the same fields.
